James Townsend

James Townsend, son of Garret and Mary Jane Townsend, was born in Logan, Harrison County Iowa on July 16, 1868 and passed away at Corning, Iowa at 5:40 p.m. on December 13, 1954 at the age of 80 years, 4 months, and 27 days.
Mr. Townsend was born and spent his early childhood at Logan, Iowa. When he was 10 years old, he went west with his parents and they settled on a claim in Elgin, Nebraska. He lived with his parents in Elgin until he was about 19 years of age when he came to Adams County, Iowa. He spent most of his life farming until he retired and came to Corning to live.
On December 9, 1890 he was united in marriage to Mina Brentnall. He was preceded in death by one son, Frank of Corning and is surivived by his widow and the following children, Mrs. Frank Schaub (Grace) of Corning, Mrs. Kenneth Cory (Dorothy) of Shenandoah, and Earl Townsend of Corning. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren, also a niece, Mrs. Ruth Driskill of Corning and other relatives and friends.
Mr. Townsend believed in the teachings of the holy scriptures and was baptized in the Christian Church. He was a member of the Woodman of the World. He was cheerful even in declining health. He belie4ved in the eternal goodness of God.
The funeral was held in the Roland Funeral Home on Wednesday afternoon, December 15 at 2:00 with Rev. Frank Jacobs conducting the service. Music was by Mrs. Esther Roland and John Riegel with Mrs. Marian Champ pianist. Burial was in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
