Lillian Mary Sterling, the daughter of William H. Riley and Emma Schafroth Riley, was born October 31, 1898 in Mercer township of Adams County, Iowa and passed away January 3, 1978 at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Corning, at the age of 79 years, two months and three days.
Lillian grew up on a farm and attended school near Mercer Center in Adams county as a girl. She was united in marriage to Christopher Sterling on October 13. 1919. To this union four children were born; Ivan, Berniece, Maxine and Betty.
Most of their lives were spent on a farm in Adams County. Later they moved to Corning where she enjoyed her children and grandchildren. Lillian was always lending a helpful hand and truly enjoyed helping others.
Surviving are her son Ivan and his wife Dorothy of Ellston; and three daughters, Berniece Brown and her husband Jean of Corning, Maxine Boyd and her husband Don of Creston, and Betty Lundhigh and her husband Sam of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and by two brothers. Howard Riley of Lenox and Raymond Riley of Corning.
Also surviving are 11 grandchildren: Patty Hainline and husband Fred of Corning, Douglas Sterling and wife Debbie of Creston, Dennis Sterling and his wife Elizabeth of Ft. Hood, Texas; Nancy Sterling of Creston and John. Sterling of Ellston;. Ron Brown of Kansas City, Lana McLaren and husband Phil of Massena; Sandra McMichal and husband Lee of Creston; Steven Boyd who is in the Armed Forces in Texas; Scott Boyd of Creston; and Lisa Ann Lundhigh of Tulsa. Oklahoma. In addition. Lillian is survived by eight great-grandchildren, as well as by many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, who passed away in February of 1974; two brothers, Clarence and William Riley Jr. and also a grandson Robert Allen Sterling in 1972.
She was a member of the Corning United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held at the Larkin-Roland Funeral Home in Corning January 5 at 1:30 p.m., with Rev. James W. King and Rev. Howard Wells officating.
Interment was in the West Fairview Cemetery at Lenox, Iowa.
Music was provided by Donna Peckham, organist, and Ruth Tranbarger, vocalist. Pallbearers were Harold Riley, Jim Briles. Howard Wells, Gene Mullin, John Riegel, and Albert Boswell.
