Irene Schafroth
Irene Russell Schafroth, daughter of J. Albert and Laura Harkness Russell, was born June 29, 1894 in Adams County, Iowa, and entered into rest Aug. 29, 1985, at the Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa, at the age of 91 years and 2 months.
She spent Her entire life in Adams County, attending country school through the 8th grade and graduating from high school with the class of 1914. She taught in rural schools until March 22, 1922, when she was united in marriage with George L. Schafroth. Three children were born to this union. Irene was baptized into the Baptist Church in Corning at an early age, and transferred her membership to the Mercer Center United Methodist Church after her marriage where she was a faithful member and loyal worker as long as her health permitted. She was active in U.M.W. and held every office except president in that organization.
She was a kind and loving wife and mother and her greatest joy was having her family with her. She was always ready to lend a helping hand and considered the needs of others before her own. She loved flowers and nature and her special hobby was making quilts for her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents and four brothers, Dallas, Dale, Irl and Howard.
Survivors include her husband, George, of Corning; two daughters, Wilma Brenner and husband Alfred of Baltimore, Md., and Irene Marie Nordell and husband Ben of Rapid City, S.D.; a son, Russell Lee and wife Joanna of Nauvoo, 111.; a brother, Clarence Russell and wife Marjorie of Corning; two sisters-in-law, Hazel Russell of Corning, Iowa, and Lillian Thorton of Portland, Ore.; 11 .grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Mercer Center Methodist Church at Lenox Sept. 2 at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Lester Hesseltine officiating.
Interment was in Walnut Grove Cemetery,Corning.
Music was provided by Doloris Wood, pianist and LaVerne Bovaird, vocalist. Casket bearers were Ted Russell, Earl Russell, Donald Young, Jerry Russell, Bernard Miller and Marshall Miller.
