Owen Ray "Buck" Schafroth

Owen Ray "Buck" Schafroth, son of Joe and Grace Hill Schafroth, was born Sept. 5, 1915, near Mercer Center, Iowa, and passed away March 7, 1986, at Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa, at the age of 70 years, 6 months and 2 days, following a prolonged illness.
He lived in the Adams County area throughout his life.
He married Hattie Uehling Oct. 27, 1934, at Corning, Iowa. They had five children, JoAnn, David, Stephen, Lynn and Randee.
Owen had a variety of jobs. In the 1940's he was a machinery and car dealer. In the 1950's he harvested blue grass seed. For nine years he was manager of the Farmer's Coop Exchange in Corning. He served on the Corning City Council, the Quarterback Club, and the Corning Gun Club.
In 1955 he was named Currier Hall "Dad of the Year" at the University of Iowa while his daughter JoAnn attended school.
"Buck's" top priority has always been helping family and friends in need. He enjoyed fishing and sports. The past 15 years he has fed and raised cattle on his farm near Carl, retiring in 1984. Owen and Hattie celebrated their 50th
wedding anniversary in 1984.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Grace Schafroth.
Survivors are his wife, Hattie; children, JoAnn Dvorak and husband Vern of Camp Springs, Md., David "Buck" of Corning, Stephen "Pedro" and his wife Florence of Spokane, Wash., Lynn "Deak" and his wife Linda of Corning and Randee Fieselmann and husband John of Booneville, Iowa; 18 grandchildren, Eric and Joey Dvorak, Holly Dunne, Julie and David Schafroth, Brent Schafroth, Chris Savegnago, Melanie Clegg, Chris, Kim and Lara Schafroth, Cindy, Sandy and Jimmy Eades, Lonnie and Lannie Schafroth, Emily and Peter Fieselmann; and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lucille (Mrs. James Reynolds) of Des Moines, Iowa and Minnie (Mrs. Rod Poindexter) of Denver, Colo.
Some of his happiest moments were spent with his grandchildren. He was a kind and loving patriarch and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services were held at the Gauthier Funeral Home in Corning March 10 at 2:30 p.m. with Joseph Cook officiating.
Interment was in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Corning, Iowa. Music was provided by Marie Ekdahl, organist, Peter Jacobus, guitarist and St. Patrick Choir. Casket bearers were David Schafroth, Jr., Lonnie Schafroth and Lannie Schafroth, Bob Mack, Kevin Wynn, Paul Wynn and Peter Fieselmann. Honorary bearers were Eric Dvorak, Dick Miller, Bryan Goodvin, Lewis Bissell, Russell Waage, Marshall Miller and Glen Van Houten.
A memorial has been established to the Corning Firemen and local charities.
