The mantle of sadness was spread over a large part of Adams County Saturday when word came that Mrs. F.J. Heaton had passed away at a Creston hospital after an illness of six weeks. It is only occasionally we find such a character as Adna Heaton, who inherited the generous disposition of her pioneer parents, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Robeson, whose latchstring was always out to friend and stranger alike. She inclined her mind to the pure and good things of life, and kept sweet always. Her purse, her strength, her time and her love were freely given- where needed, and when she entered a sick room her presence seemed to cause a light to shine from somewhere. It is well in the eternal grid to pause for a moment and consider such characters. Our success in doing the part assigned depends entirely upon the good we do, and the happiness we are able to throw into the lives of others. Measured by this standard, Mrs. Heaton suceeded most abundantly.
Adna A., only daughter of Calvin and Margaret Robeson, was born on the 9th day of May, 1873, on the home farm, near Brooks, where she grew to young womanhod and was united in marriage to Frank J. Heaton on March 18, 1891. One son, Ivan M. was born to this union. All the brothers and sisters of Mr. Heaton, except the oldest one, have called Mrs. Heaton's home their home. Hazel Heaton Snethen, the youngest sister, remaining in the home from the age of seven until she was married. After the death of her mother in 1906, her aged father was taken into her home and tenderely cared for until his death in 1915.
In early life Mrs. Heaton united with the M.E. Church at Iveyville, later transferring her membership to the Brooks Church, where she was a leader in all church activities. For many years she had been a member of both the Eastern Star and Royal Neighbors Lodges. Hr home was always open to anything pertaining to church, school or betterment of the community. Frank Robeson, her only brother, preceded her in death in 1914. Practically her whole life was spent in Corning and Brooks. Her death occurred at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston, August 28,1926 at 1:10 p.m. at the age of 53 years, 3 months and 19 days.
Funeral services were conducted on Monday afternoon, at 2:00 o'clock by Rev. S.L. Dezell, the present pastor who was assisted by Rev. E.H. Jackson, of Blanchard, Iowa, who preceded Rev. Dezell on the Brooks charge. The Royal Neighbors ladies attended this service in a body. The burial took place on Tuesday afternoon, at 2:00 o'clock at Prairie Rose Cemetery, where the funeral rites were carried out by the Eeastern Star. "She rests from her labors and her works do follow her".
