Old friends in Corning were grieved to learn of the death of Rollin J. Devore at his home in Tonkawa, Oklahoma, the 11th of July, 1915. For a number of years Mr. Devore was a resident of Corning and he was well known to many of our readers. The Chieftain of Tonkawa contained in substance the obituary given below, which will be of interest to our readers. Mr. Devore was a mail carrier on a rural route out of Tonkawa for about 11 years and the Chieftain speaks very highly of his service.
Rollin J. Devore was born February 14, 1847, near Urbana, Champaign County, Ohio. He died in Tonkawa, Oklahoma, July 11, 1915, at 3:00 o''clock p.m. Mr. Devore was one of the youngest veterans of the civil war, having enlisted at the age of 15 in Company H. 66th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and served his country as a soldier for three years. He was honorably discharged June 15, 1865. During these three years he saw service in many of the fierest battles of the war, including the three awful days at Gettysburg. In 1868, he married Miss Jennie Miller, of Mingo, Champaign County, Ohio, who died in Adams County, Iowa April 8, 1880. To Mr. and Mrs. Devore three children were born. They are O.J.Devore of Poncca City; Mrs. Lonetta Ankeny of Dixon, Nebraska; Mrs. Oro Lindberg of Omaha, Nebraska. In 1882, Mr. Devore was married to Miss Angeline McMillin, of Taylor County, Iowa. To this union five children were born. They are Earl Devore of Baldwin City, Kansas;' Mrs. Hope Johnson of Kay County; Noel, Hazel and Susie Devore, Tonkawa. In 1891 Mr. Devore and family moved to Guthrie, Oklahoma, where he made a living for himself and family by sprinkling the city's streets. In 1892 he moved upon an Indian lease 2 1/2 miles southeast of Tonkawa. In 1893 he made the race in the cherokee strip and staked the farm that A.J. Esch now owns. After living upon the farm for seven years he moved with his family to Tonkawa where he resided until his death.
