Henry Harrison Hill
This community was shocked Tuesday morning when the news was received that Henry Hill, for many years one of the leading business men of Corning, had passed away at his residence on Eighth Street of angina pectorus, a form of heart failure. He had been about as usual the day before but had complained of a severe pain in the chest. In the evening a physician was called and Mrs. Hill who was away from home for a short time. Late Mr. Hill said he was feeling better and Tuesday morning he said he was much better but the family noticed his limbs were cold and summoned a physician but before his arrival Mr. Hill had returned to Him who gave and a valued and honored citizen had passed away.
Mr. Hill was a self made man and for nearly thirty years was in the grocery business on the east side of Davis Avenue and always attended strictly to his business and gained a reputation among the many who traded with him of being strictly honorable and when he said an article was high grade, no matter whether over the phone or personally, it was just as he recommended. This gained him many lasting friends and customers and this together with a close application to business, made his business a financial success and from a small beginning, Mr. Hill had gathered enough of this world's goods together that two years ago he retired from active business, selling to two of his nephews C. S. Hill and Geo. Law. The success of Mr. Hill was made possible by his close personal attention to business and he was there early nd late. His success out to be a model for any young man to want to imitate. It means success and an honored life and when the end comes he will be greatly missed in the home, the church will miss him and the community will mourn.
Corning does not have enough men like Henry Hill and neither has any other town or city. Such men build up a community and make this a better world.
Henry Harrison Hill was born in Wyoming County, New York, June 9, 1857, and was aged 63 years, 5 months, and 28 days. He came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Hill in 1870, where he has since resided with the exception of four years which he spent as clerk at a store in Kirkman. Upon his return to Corning, he with H. E. Baker purchased a grocery store, conducting business for two years, then disposed of his interest to his partner and accepted a position in the Z. T. Widener mercantile establishment. He entered into the grocery business for himself, December 5, 1890, which he conducted until he sold to his nephews. He married Miss Cora Champ October 13, 1891, who survives him with one sister and three brothers, Mrs. J. E. Carmichael, H. S. Hill, William Hill, Charles Hill. The funeral was held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m at the Methodist Church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Jay Kirkendall. Interment was made in Walnut Grove Cemetery. For many years he was one of the leading members of the Methodist Church and was also a member of the K.P. and Masonic Lodges.
