After being physically incapacitated and hopelessly ill since suffering a cerebral hemorrhage the evening of Feb. 23, 1963, Mrs. J.Calvin [Elsie B] Potter of Greenfield passed away late Saturday evening June 8 at the Adair County Memorial Hospital in Greenfield, Iowa, where she had been cared for during her long and difficult illness. News of her death came as a deep sorrow to the many friends of this beloved and estimable lady.
Mrs. Potter was born Elsie Berlin Clark, Jan. 24,1877 near pittsburgh, Pennsylvania the youngest daughter of William Herdman and Catherine Clark.
Her marriage to John Calvin Potter of Stuart, Iowa took place June 4, 1902 and she came to Iowa as a bride. The couple established their 1st home on a farm southeast of Stuart. This was their home for 11 years and they then purchased a home for themselves [a farm known as the Fry Place] west of the Mount Vernon Church in Lincoln Township. Here they enjoyed 33 years active and happy years before retiring from the farm and moving to Greenfield to spend the afternoon of life. In later years they spent the winters in Texas returning in springtime to be with friends and neighbors in familiar places and to look after theirbusiness interests here.
No children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Potter, but, Mrs. Potter was frequently heard to say that she loved all children and that all little children were hers.
