Evangeline Williams, 95, passed away Feb.24 at Greenfield.
Evangeline Beryl Williams was born Nov.16,1908 to Lewis Albert & Esther Belle [Selby] Gipple on a farm in Cass County. They moved to a farm in the Bridgewater area in 1909 at age 3 & 1/2 months & lived in the Adair County vicinity the remainder of her life.
Vangle attended rural schools & graduated from 8th grade in 1921, graduated from Bridgewater High School in 1925 & Fontanelle High School in 1926 where she received her normal training course. She attended Iowa State University 1 year & taught in rural schools from 1926 until 1930.
Vangle was an active member of the Church of Christ since 1921 where she was baptized at the age of 13. She served as Sunday School teacher, Bible School leader, a camp councilor, was in choir & the aid society.
On June 25,1930 Vangeline was united in marriage to Elto K.Williams. She was a homemaker & housewife for 65 plus yearswith the exception of being substitute teacher & doing volunteer community service during WW 1. Her hobbies were cooking, reading & cleaning.
Vangle served on the hospital board of trustees, was 1 of 3 members of Bridgewater to serve on the committee for the initial bloodmobile visits to the area, was county cancer co-chairman with Mrs.Frost Patterson in the Bridgewater-Fontanelle district, organized the Wednesday Club in 1937 with the Charter members being the wives of 6 young business men, Irene Gipple, Lorna Yarrow, Shirley Campbell, Mildred Metzger, Marion Knelp & Evangeline. She was steward-ship member of the Iowa National Heritage Foundation for serveral years. Her 2 philosophies in life were secular [que sera sera, whatever will be will be] & scriptural [Romans 8:20-31.
Through their home was not blessed with children, both were fond of them & had much pleasure from the many nieces & nephews & watching the little neighbor children grow-up.
Vangle's demise brings the closure of the Williams name relative to the original Bridgewater Oil Co. [1028-1973] which E.K. served with responibility, honesty, sacrifice & plweasure over those years.
She was preceded in death by her husband Elto; her parents; sisters; brothers; nephews & brothers-in-law.
Survivors include nieces, nephews, sister-in-law, other relatives & friends.
Funeral services were held ThursdayFeb.26 at Trinity Christian Church in Bridgewater with the Rev.David Clark officiating.
Music tributes were by pianist Zola Westphal, & vocalists Ron & Sharon Elliott.
Pallbearers were John Sullivan, J.C.McCall, Dale Feazell, Stanley Frese, Edwin Williams & Merritt Bower.
Honorary pallbearers were Clara Zeitlow, Ernest & Treva Ford, Eleanor Steward,Alvin Frese, Bonnie Blazek, James & Lena Wyllie & Loyal & Valda Goff.
The floral committee was Grace Mundt, Phyllis Marnin, Pam Frese & Marilyn Whitaker.
Interment was in the Garner Cemetery near Bridgewater.
Professional services were provided by Steen Funeral Homes.
