Velma Irene Sheriff Nelson, 92, passed away on Feb.28,2003, at the Creston Nursing & Rehab Center in Creston.
Velma graduated from Zion High School in 1928. She attended Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines & graduated in 1929.
On April 7,1935 she married George James Nelson. They celebrated 37 years together.
On June 1,1940 George & his brother Charles opened Nelson Brothers Hardware. George, Velma, Gladys and Charles were active in running the business until George's death in 1972.
In 1946 Ted Allen was adopted into the Nelson home.
Velma served as a clerk for the Adair County Treasurer & then was elected to the office of Adair County Treasurer serving in that capacity for 8 years.
Velma loved to garden, her flowers and quilting.
Velma was a member of the United Church of Christ in Orient, the Creston Lodge & the Republican Party. She was a frequent donor for the Red Cross Blood Program & the Iowa Methodist Hospital Walking Blood Bank. She served as a volunteer for the Creston Community Hospital & the Adair County Memorial Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; 2 sisters & a brother.
Survivors include her son Ted Nelson of Burlington; grandson Jon of Galena, Ill.; & granddaughter Jennifer of Winthrop, Mass.
Funeral services were held Tuesday March 4, at Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield with the Rev.Duane Rhoadarmer officiating.
Music was by Marilyn Geidel organist.
Palllbearers were Cliff Sheriff, Jeff Inlow, Bruce Sheriff, Harold Williams, Wendell Sheriff & Larry Woosley.
Honorary Pallbearers were Dean Nelson, Robert Stutt, Bob Ferguson, Bill Nelson, Dick Blazek, Dale Pals, Arnold Sheriff, Ed Roberts, Mike Inlow & Ron Ross.
Floral committee was Lois Pals & Shirley Ross.
Interment was in the Greenfield Cemetery.
