Paul Julius Gross, child of Lorenz Gross and Margaretta Friedlein was born June 23,1880 in Clarion Township, Bureau County, Ill. He was the oldest of a family of 7 children.
On July 25,1880, he was baptized in the Christian faith in the Name of the Triune God. After being duly instructed in God's Word on the principles of the Christian faith, he was confirmed in Zion Ev. Lutheran Church, Clarion on April 1,1894 by Rev. Heinrich Decker.His former education was received in the Clarion Township schools. In March 1905 he and his brother Gilbert moved to Iowa to a farm near Fontanelle on which he resided for 35 years.
He was united in marriage with Katherine Johanna Ehm on Oct.10,1905. To this union 3 children were born. He retired from the farm in 1940 and with his wife, moved to Fontanelle where he lived for the remainder of his life.
On May 23,1958 in the early morning hours, after several months of failing health, he was called out of this life at the age of 78 years and 11 months. He is survived by his wife Katie and 3 children Frieda Mrs. Charles Euler; son Arthur; and Eileen Mrs. Wayne Handley, all of the Fontanelle vicinity; 7 grandchildren; 2 great- grandchildren; 1 sister Esther Mrs.Ed Goetz of Perus, Ill.; and 1 brother August of Fontanelle, besides many other relatives and friends in the community where he spent 54 years of his earthly life. Mr. Gross was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church and for 54 years was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church at Fontanelle.
