Robert "Bob" Eckardt 74 died Sept.14,2004 after a 5 month battle with cancer at Kavanagh Grand Hospice after leaving his home on 45th Street just a few days before his passing.
Bob was born in Madison County April 11,1930 to Floyd and Gertrude [Estell] Eckardt.
He served in the U.S.Air Force.
He and Marianne were married June 4,1954. They had made their home in Des Moines since 1956 where he graduated from Drake University, did insurance underwritting and had Eckardt Insurance Agency until retirement in 1990. Recently he was a part-time driver for NeighborCare, delivering medications to nursing homes. He enjoyed driving and traveling, gathering Greenfield relatives together for frequent reunions, playing pinochle, and bridge, watching Dr.Phil and sports events on TV and country music.
He was a member of the Methodist Church, American Legion and VFW.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Larry Rice.
He is survived by his wife Marianne [Staley] Eckardt, and Pucci his little white poodle. Also surviving are his sister Shirley Rice of Murray and his brother Dean and wife Caroline of Ankeny; niece Lori and husband Randy Burchett and nephews Steve, Scott and wife Chris, Brad, Bret, Mark and wife Jill Eckardt, and Mike Rice and family; aunts,uncles,cousins and 2 special cousins Earl and wife Kathy Estell and family of Norwalk and J.D. and wife Donna McCoy and family of Buena Park,Calif.
A memorial service was held Saturday Sept.18 at Westover Funeral Home. Cremains will be cared for by the family at a later date.
