Hazel Montgomery Thompson 94, passed away in Hanford, Calif., June 30,2004.
A former resident of the Greenfield, Canby and Casey areas, Hazel Pearl Fox was born in Adair County, Sept.25,1909 to Edward and Clara Fox.
As a young girl, Hazel Fox married Seldon Montgomery and to this union, 9 children were born. The family lived in Greenfield for a few years, where Hazel began a baking business, selling bread, cinnamon rolls and other baked goods to local residents. They then lived in Casey and Canby until 1942 when they moved to Hanford, Calif., where Hazel worked in restaurants before owning and operating her own for more than 40 years.
Her marriage to Seldon Montgomery ending in divorce, she later married Thomas Winston "Win" Thompson, who preceded her in 1967. Also preceding her were her parents; brother Lawrence Fox of Greenfield; sisters Velma McCartney of Bagley and Gertie Tannatt of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughters Carol Montgomery, Sandra Montgomery and Shirley Sousa of Hanford, Calif.
Survivors include her children Donald and wife Jan Montgomery of Greenfield, John and wife Adelina Montgomery of Hanford,Calif., Richard and wife Georgia Montgomery of Tulare, Calif., Bobby and wife Loretta Montgomery of Platteville, Colo., Janice Reyes of Los Alamitos, Calif., and Larry and wife Janet Montgomery of Hanford, Calif.; 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchilden and 5 great-great-grandchildren; 1 sister-in-law Bernadine Fox of Greenfield; 2 stepchildren Dorothy Blankenship of Hanford, Calif. and Robert Thompson of Las Vegas, Nev. and many other relatives and friends in Calif. and Iowa.
Funeral services were held Tuesday July 6 at People's Funeral Chapel in Hanford, with Pastor Bill Fritz of the Missionary Baptist Church of Armona, Calif., officiating.
Soloist was Lori Reyes a granddaughter of the deceased.
Pallbearers were Don, John, Bobby, Richard, Howard and Fred Montgomery and Kevin Reyes.
Interment was at Hanford Cemetery.
