Margaret L.Smith 90, passed away on July 12,2004 at Community Care Center in Stuart.
Margaret Louella was born on Nov.24,1913 to Robert O. and Kate E. [McCaulley] Skellenger near Casey, the youngest of 7 children. She started to school in Casey, but 1 year later the family moved to Eugene, Ore. It wasn't long before they missed Iowa and returned to Adair County where Margaret lived for most of her life. Margaret graduated from Stuart High School in 1933.
On Sept.30,1935 she was united in marriage to Carl D.Smith. One son, Conrad T.Smith was born on Jan.13,1946 to this union.
Margaret and Carl farmed for many years south of Menlo and also managed a meat locker in Menlo for many years. Margaret was employed by Younkers in Des Moines for several years. She loved gardening, sewing, canning and cooking for her family and many friends. She was always happy to welcome any and all who came to her home.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; husband Carl; brothers Floyd. George and Clarence Skellenger; and sisters Clara Draman, Laura Garnett, and Jessie Powell.
She is survived by her son Conrad and wife Carol of Menlo; grandsons David Smith of Phonix, Ariz., Tom Smith and wife Michelle and children Taylor, Bethany and Hunter all of Stuart; sister-in-law Lou Etta Smith of Menlo; and many niecs, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held on Thursday July 15, at 1st Congregational Church of Stuart with Pastor John Bryden officiating.
Kathy Moon sang "The Old Rugged Cross" "In The Garden" and "I Will Always Love You". She was accompanied by Ida Griffin.
Serving as casket bearers were Chuck and Monty Smith, Bob Olsen, Gene Skellenger, Tom Anderson and Brent Powell.
Honorary bearers included Max, Vernon, Charles and Steve Skellenger, Mike and Rusty Schneider and Doug Powell.
The committal service and interment were at Jefferson Cemetery rural Menlo.
Professional services were provided by Ruppert Funeral Home of Stuart.
