Mrs. Clarence E. Herrick

Bessie Marie Brawdy Herrick, eldest daughter of W. P. and Nancy Isabelle Brawdy, was born December 4, 1890 in Adair County, three miles northeast of Bridgewater and passed away after a lingering illness at her home in Bridgewater, where she attended school and from which she graduated with the class of 1909. Following which she taught in the rural schools near here for about a year and a half.

She was united in marriage on March 13, 1910 to Mr. Clarence Edson Herrick at the home of his parents Rev. and Mrs. George T. Herrick, south of Bridgewater on what is known as the old Hendry farm. To this union seven children were born, all of whom are living except one son, Mayo who died in infancy.

She was a member of the Bridgewager Church of Christ for many years where she was a faithful attendant and worker until her health failed over a year ago when she suffered a stroke which left her partially paralyzed and bedfast most of the time. Although she improved, and was able to be moved about in a wheel chair some, when on April 26, she suffered another stroke and had remained in a critical condition until her death Saturday evening about 7:30 o'clock.

Mrs. Herrick was a wonderful homemaker and her home, husband and children and their children, were her first interests in life, but also by her cheerful and helpful disposition made many friends whom she was also ready to help in many ways.

She was a great lover of flowers and enjoyed working with them as could readily be seen and enjoyed by others in her yard and gardens.

Upon the sudden death of her mother on September 8, 1916, she took her baby brother, Wayne, and mothered and cared for him along with her own baby Floyd, and later moved with her family into her father's home and made a home not only for her own family but for her father, younger sister and brothers for several years.

During the past several months she has been tenderly and lovingly cared for by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Harley Brawdy who with her husband and small son Vernon had moved into the home of Mr. and Mrs. Herrick to assist with the household duties and care for Mrs. Herrick.

Mrs. Herrick was preceded in death by her mother, one son Mayo and one brother, Mayo. She is survived by her devoted husband and companion and six children; two sons and four daughters, Malcolm of Greenfield, Floyd of East Rockaway, New York; Mrs. Maxine Fell of High Point, North Carolina; Mrs. Darlene Lassen of Pearl City, Hawaii; Mrs. Beulah Yankus of East Rockaway, New York; Miss Loretta Herrick of Omaha,, Nebr., all of whom were permitted to be present and assist in their mother's care during her last illness with the exception of Mrs. Lassen who was unable to come at this time but who had spent several months here caring for her mother during her first illness and had only returned to Hawaii last December. There are seven grandchildren. Other survivors are her aged father, W. P. Brady of Bridgewater, two sisters, Mrs. Effie Glade of Bridewater and Mrs. Doris Baer of Schuyler, Nebr. and three brothers, Harley and Don Brawdy of Bridgewater, and Wayne Brawdy of Muldrow, Oklahoma and many other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ in Bridgwater on Tuesday afternoon, May 10 at 2 o'clock. The pastor, Rev. Joel Boone of Cumberland had charge of the services. The music was furnished by a mixed quartette composed of Mrs. Lud Shatava, Mrs. Clem Sinner, Mr. Milburn Pote and Mr. Elto Williams, who sang "Ivory Palaces" and "No Disappointment In Heaven". Mrs. Shatava sang a solo "After" and Mr. Pote sang as a solo "Sometime We'll Understand". The accompaniments were played on the piano by Mrs. G. L. Campbell.

The pallbearers were George E. and Verne T. Herrick, brothers-in-law of the deceased and her cousins, Fern, Clyde, Clarence and Harley Stanley. The interment was made in the Witt cemetery.
