Died, at his home at Quenemo, Kansas, Monday, February 10, 1913, Dr. A. (Adolphus) J. Scofield, in the 61st year of his life. Dr. Scofield was born at Eden, Delaware county, Ohio, May 30, 1852. He was the son of Benjamin Burt Scofield II and Sarah Ann (Bonham) Scofield. The home of his parents at the time of his birth was in Cleveland, Ohio, but his mother at this time was at her mother's home near Eden.

In August 1852, he with his parents moved to Henry county, Illinois, where he lived on a farm until near manhood. He came to Adair county in 1872 and spent his young manhood in and around Greenfield. He learned the carpenter and joiner's trade from his father and became a fine mechanic. He afterwards took up the study of medicine and graduated at Ensworth Medical college of St. Joseph, Missouri. He practice medicine at Macksburg, Iowa for about fourteen years, when he moved to Waverly, Kansas, four years ago. March 22, 1912 he located at Quenemo where death came, and he ceased from the cares and struggles of life.

He was married February 5, 1875 to Parthenia Norman at the bride's house in Illinois. To them were born six children, three of who preceded him to the grave. He was a very active life, and whatever he undertook to do, he did it well.

The Doctor was a successful physician, kindly dispositioned, with a love for home life, devoted, kind and affectionate. An honorable, upright man of good repute among his friends and fellows. His friendship, when once formed, was like that of Jonathan to David, and when he met a fellow traveler who was less fortunate than himself he was ready to lend a helping hand and divide his purse, if need be. Quiet, unobtrusive and one whom one must know to understand and appreciate his good qualities. He was one who deserved bouquets before death but quite too often are the flowers saved for the casket. He and his brother H. P. were intimately friendly, and Mr. Scofield has the sympathy of his friends at this place in the loss of an intimate brother.
