Velma Arlene (Armstrong) Elliott

Velma Arlene Elliott was born on July 18, 1911, in Fontanelle, Iowa to Adam and Abbie (Moon) Armstrong. She passed away on Friday on Friday, March 7, 2008 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines at the age of 96.

Velma was raised in Fontanelle and graduated from Greenfield High School in 1928. On November 14, 1931, Velma was united in marriage to Orla J. Elliott and to this union a daughter, Delores was born.

Velma was a country school teacher, Adair County Treasurer and later moved to Des Moines to be near her daughter and family. She worked at Joseph’s Jewelers and later for Brenton Bank. She retired from Brenton and has been retired for 32 years.

Velma enjoyed crossword puzzles until she lost her eyesight and she especially enjoyed caring for her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Orla Elliott; son-in-law, Murell Chambers; and several brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her daughter, Delores Chambers of Des Moines; grandchildren: Roger and Cathy Chambers of Des Moines and Ronda and Denny Wendt of Kansas City, Missouri; great grandchildren; Amy and Pablo Marquez of Kansas City, Jason Duden of Des Moines, Abby Chambers of Des Moines, and Michelle Chambers of Des Moines; great-great grandchildren: Maleah and Mateo Marquez of Kansas City; one sister, Myrtle and Don Diers of Fontanelle; nieces; nephews; other relatives ad friends.

The family of Velma Elliott wishes to express their gratitude for all acts of kindness shown to them in their time of sorrow and invites you to join them for refreshments at Bon’s Bakehouse following the services at the (Greenfield) cemetery.
