Vera Mae Vandewater, 91, died March 25, 2009, at the Virginia Gay Nursing & Rehab in Vinton.

A private family memorial will be held at a later date. Burial of the cremains will be at Hebron Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Phillips Funeral Home in Vinton.

Vera Vandewater was born June 17, 1917, in Grand River Township, Adair County, to Corvan and Jessie (Stickney) Vandewater. She spent her life in Grand River Township until moving to Greenfield in 1990, living there until moving to Vinton June 9, 2006. Vera worked as a gatekeeper at the Old Threshers Days in Mt. Pleasant for many years.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Anthony and Alberta Steffens.

She is survived by a sister, Terri Carole Grieco of Mesa, Ariz.; five stepsisters — Fay Lemon and Mae Rinard, both of Winterset, Wilma Frank of Cheyenne, Wyo., L’Nora Jacobi of Genoa, Neb., and Fay Smith of Mesa, Ariz.; and a stepbrother, William Zach of Columbia, N.M.
