Mrs. N. R. Ward Called by Death

Mary Emma Ward was born in Richland Township, Adair County, Iowa, August 12, 1858. She was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Ewing, Adair County pioneers. Her father was a veteran of the Civil War having enlisted from Adair County. Her girlhood was spent at her home near Fontanelle, where she was united in marriage to Norman R. Ward, August 13, 1876 and located on a farm near Fontanelle where they lived till the spring of 1882 when they moved to Neligh, Nebraska, located on a claim and living the life of pioneers until 1894 when they returned to Adair County where she has spent most of her time since, excepting the last five years which have been with her daughter Ernestine at Iowa City and Beloit, Wisconsin. To this union eight children were born, five of whom survive her. They are: Mrs. W.S. Bennett, New Lisbon, Wisconsin; Mrs. George Thompson, Shenandoah, Iowa; Avery E., Greenfield, Iowa; Floyd E., of Fontanelle, Iowa; and Ernestine, of Beloit, Wisconsin; all of whom were present at the funeral except Mr. W. S. Bennett who due to ill health was unable to be here. Those preceding her in death are: Ralph, Elsie and Freddie. She is also survived by two brothers and two sisters: H.O Ewing, Alton, Iowa; Roy of Long Beach, California; Mrs. Will Ford, Zion, Iowa; and Mrs. Fred Ross, Randolph, Nebraska. Also six grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Mrs. Ward became ill in May while in Beloit, and as soon as her daughters school closed in June she returned here and has been living at the homes of her sons. She seemed much better but was taken worse last Wednesday morning and passed away late that night July 8, 1931, at the age of 72 years, 10 months and 26 days.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. A.M. Bressler of Nevinville in the Congregational Church in Fontanelle Sunday afternoon at two o'clock. Interment in the Otis Chapel cemetery of Richland Township.
