Jay A. Mount, 86, one of the first pilots to fly air mail in the United States and later the head of his own engineering consulting firm, died at his home in Bethesda Saturday following an apparent heart attack.

Mr. Mount was born in Greenfield, Iowa, and grew up on a farm there. He joined the Army Air Service in World War I. After the war, he attended the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y., and then joined the air mail service when it was organized in the early 1920s.In 1925, he worked for the Air Commerce Division of the Department of Commerce. He resigned in 1936 to form his consulting firm, Mount and Co., which he headed until his death.

Mr. Mount was an honorary life member of the Congressional County Club, a member of the National Press Club, of the Press Club Post of the American Legion, of the Airmail Pioneers, and of the Society of Naval Engineers. He also was a member of the Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church in Washington.

Survivors include two sons, Jay M., and S. Warren, both of Bethesda; six grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
