Margaret Emily (Orr) McCann

Margaret (Orr) McCann

Margaret Emily Orr was born in Postville to Frank and Emily (Topliff) Orr, descendants of early Irish-Scottish settlers. One of five sisters and a brother, Margaret graduated from the Monona Schools in 1904, and spent a year at the state teachers college in Cedar Falls before deciding that a teaching career was not for her.

In 1920 Margaret married Hadwin W. M'Cann of Volga, later a teacher and coach in the Monona Schools. Sharing a love of sports, they spent most of their married life in the Chicago area, where he coached and taught.

More recently, Margaret worked as sales clerk in a jewelry store and is proud of having been "on my own since the 1950's." An active club woman, she is a charter member of the Chicago Heights' Woman's Club, a charter member of the Former Presidents Club, and a fifty year member of Eastern Star.

Margaret continues to enjoy life at its fullest, rarely missing daily activities at the Center. Already enjoying baseball season, she's busy cheering on her favorites, the Cubs.

Louise (Ohloff) Meyer

The spotlight this month at the Good Samaritan Center, Postville, focuses on Louise Meyer who has made her home at the center since October, 1970.

Louise was born March 25, 1892 on a farm south of Postville in Clayton County. Her parents were Carl and Mary Krogman Ohloff. As a small child she moved with her parents to Postville where they operated a garden nursery.

Louise received her schooling in the Postville public school. She was baptized and confirmed in St. Paul Lutheran Church where she is a member.

On February 25, 1914 she was married to Charles W. Meyer of Clermont and they made their home on a farm in Henderson Prairie in Fayette County. They had three children, Esther, Marie and Willard Meyer, all of Postville.

She was widowed March, 1922 but continued to reside on the home farm with her children until moving to Postville in January, 1963.

Until ill health intervened, she was an active member of the Church and the Lutheran Church Women as well as the Henderson Prairie Study club. She still enjooys several activities at the Center.
