Luella 'Hazel' (Rowland) Cunningham

Hazel (Rowland) Cunningham

(Luella) Hazel Cunningham was born Dec. 16, 1892 north of Monona. Her father refused to call her Louella [sic] so she's been Hazel all her life.

After attending grade and high school she taught in country schools for seven terms. She remembers the salary as being "somewhere around $25."

Hazel has two sons, Darrell of Burbank, Calif. and Eldon of Midland, Texas. She also has two grandsons.

Her husband, who died in 1964, worked for the town of Monona. "He was a marshal who never carried a gun - he didn't have to," says Hazel. They always lived in Monona.

The years have been very productive for Hazel. An active member of the Methodist church, she did much volunteer work. She made hundreds of pairs of scuffies which were sent to the Veterans Hospital at Iowa City. She also made "many, many" laprobes which she donated to the Good Samaritan Center.

Now that she's a resident, she recognizes much of her handiwork which has been put to good use. She also helps fold clothes and is busy at her sewing machine hemming diapers.

She and her husband celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1964. She chose to come to the Good Samaritan Center because she has many friends here. "It's now my home and I'm happy here."
