Washington Prairie Lutheran Cemetery - photo by Connie Street

Welcome to the Washington Prairie Lutheran Cemetery Page. This document summarizing data for 1265 graves is based on a 100% photo survey conducted by Bill Waters on August 3, 2009 and was created by merging the information found in the Works Project Administration (WPA) 1930’s Graves Registration Survey (382 records), the ongoing Iowa Gravestone Photo Project (GPP) (1230 records), and the ongoing IAGenWeb Obituaries (Obits) (8 records). These tables include links to 0 pictures of the deceased. To add pictures of the deceased to this table, send the pictures you want added to your county coordinator. The left columns of the tabulation facilitate your viewing of the source data WPA (W), GPP (P) and Obits (O). Note that some records in this cemetery table have more than one source; and in most cases the information is redundant. If there is a disagreement, your county coordinator has used his best judgment about which information to include in the compilation. As more data becomes available it will be merged into these tables. This summary contains a wealth of information that was made available by volunteers taking pictures and transcribing data. Those volunteers are to be applauded, keep up the good work!

The Washington Prairie Cemetery consists of 27 rows of up to 76 lots per row. Row 1 lines along the West fence. Rows 2 through 27 extend toward the East fence. Lots 1 in each row are along the South Fence with Lot 76 along the North fence. The cemetery consists of an “Old Cemetery” Rows 1 through 21 and a "New Cemetery" Rows 22 through 27. The New Cemetery was opened for use in 1940. I photographed the Cemetery in a zigzag manner form row 1 lot 1 to row 1 lot 76 then row 2 lot 76 to row 2 lot 1, etc for the entire cemetery. The “Old Cemetery” has a bulletin Board protected with a glass cover. This board has a plot of grave locations and two alphabetized lists of grave locations, one for rows 1 through 10 and a second for rows 11 through 21. I took 1103 photos at the cemetery of which 66 were of the information posted on the bulletin board. I built the Cemetery table by reading the information on the gravestone photos and referred to the photos of the bulletin board. Then I incorporated data from the WPA survey and the IAGenWeb Board obits. The Row and lot numbers that are in black correspond to the Cemetery plot, while the ones in Bold Blue are interpolated or extrapolated from the Cemetery plot. Rows 23+ are in zigzag order starting from Row 23 lot 1 proceeding toward row 23 lot 76 etc.
