Welcome to the Bloomfield Cemetery Page. This document summarizes data for 383 graves and is mainly based the Bloomfield Township Cemetery Index which Clair Cornell sent to the Hawkeye Heritage in 1985 and on a 100% Photo survey conducted by Bill Waters in August 3, 2009 and was created by merging the information found in the Works Project Administration (WPA) 1930’s Graves Registration Survey (142 Records), the ongoing Iowa Gravestone Photo Project (GPP) (374 Records), and the ongoing IAGenWeb Obituaries (Obits) (87 Records). These tables incorporate 7 pointers to photos of the deceased. The left columns of the tabulation indicate the source of the summary data WPA (W), GPP (G) and Obits (O). A camera Icon indicates that either an obit or a GPP record or both display a photo of the deceased. Note that some records have more than one source; this is because in many cases the information is redundant. If there is a disagreement, your county coordinator has used his best judgment about which information to include in the compilation. This summary contains a wealth of information that was made available by volunteers taking pictures and transcribing data. Those volunteers are to be applauded, keep up the good work! [Coordinator's note: The numbers in this summary do not "add up" for a variety of reasons, the main ones being that many married women (38) have 2 GPP records one with their maiden name and one with their married name, that most Family Stones (19) have adjacent smaller stones that mark individual graves.]
Clair Cornell sent The Bloomfield Township Cemetery Index to the Hawkeye Heritage in 1985. It was part of an article about the A Brief History Of The Universalist Church. The complete title was “Index To The Bloomfield Cemetery And A Brief History Of The Universalist Church Of Bloomfield Township In Winneshiek County, Iowa”. Connie Ellis has transcribed the information contained in The Bloomfield Township Cemetery Index and your coordinator has merged it into this Bloomfield Township Cemetery table. Thank you Connie and Clair for this valuable contribution.
Clair Cornell stated in the
Hawkeye Heritage Article that the tombstone inscriptions published here have
been alphabetized and each entry includes a "Row" identification. Burials in
five rows west of the driveway which divides the cemetery have been designated
R1W-R5W. Four rows east of the driveway have been designated R6E-R9E. For those
gravestones that were documented in Clair's article, his Row identifications are
listed in these tables.
