Welcome to the Baethke aka Rice aka Kinney Cemetery Page. This
is all that is currently known about the
Baethke aka Rice aka Kinney Cemetery, In April 1990, a member of the Winneshiek County Genealogy Society wrote this:
“The only records that show who was buried in this cemetery appear in the WPA records (Kinney Farm Cemetery). They are:
Brooks, Joshua 45y; 19 Jun 1820 22 Feb 1866
Brooks, Electra 46y; 19 Jun 1819 29 Mar 1866
Gordon, Catherine 56y; 1820 10 Apr 1876
Up until 1960, only 2 of these markers listed could still be read. At the present time there are no markers at this site. “
I beg to differ a few years later another lady and I did look for markers. We found two stones for:
Clough, Charles C d 4 Mar, 1864 aged 6y 7m 18d son of Happylo (?)
Clough, Lucinda 23 Mar 1864 aged 2y 2m 17d Daughter of h & Phebe Clough
Both stones were lying face down in the dirt. Whether these two stones were all that were found in the ditch, we will never know. The lady who was with me knew the farmer who had destroyed the stones and dumped them in the ditch. Due to much displeasure from the public that the area was plowed up and planted, the farmer made an effort to find the stones and put them back. He also enclosed the area with a fence.
From a History of Orleans Township and from a District #6 School History (Orleans Township), a sixth grader wrote “There used to be a cemetery just east of our school. Four unmarked graves still remain. By looking straight north from our school house, we can see the lone pine tree which marks a grave of a baby girl of the Wells family."

In the summer and fall of 2014,
the Pioneer Cemetery Commission decided to revitalize the Baethke aka Rice aka
Kinney Cemetery. Stacey Gossling led this effort. Stacey and her group of
volunteers have made substantial progress and the photos linked below are
testimony to their success.
This cemetery table operates with 4 windows; Winneshiek(site window), WPA (opened when you click on a W to view a WPA data record), GPP (Opened when you click a G to view a GPP photograph), and Obit (opened when you click an O to view an Iowa board obit).
