THE FIRE RECORD

Cincinnati, Dec 13 – A fire this afternoon in a large building on Walnut street below Fourth caused the total loss of $85,000 distributed as follows: Ross, Robbins & George, paper manufacturers, $70,000, insurance $50,000; Jones Brothers, dealer in electrical supplies, $10,000, insurance $8,000. The building was damaged to the extent of $5,000 which is covered by insurance.

TERRIBLE MINE EXPLOSION

Wilkesbarre, Pa., Dec, 14 – A frightful explosion of gas occurred in the Mill Creek mine this morning. About one hundred men were at work in the mine when the explosion occurred. The result is as yet unknown. The mine was operated by the Delaware and Hudson coal Company. The news spread rapidly, and the whole population soon gathered about the property. The explosion occurred in what is known as No. 12 lift, located at the extreme end of the opening slope, four thousand feet from the mouth. The gas ignited in the ballast, where a miner named Coffey was at work. An exploring, a party of 20 miners entered the slope as soon as the news reached the surface. It was soon discovered that many had been burned and they at once began removing them. Seven men were injured, one of which died. Joseph Cleasley was badly burned and his skull fractured and cannot survive; Peter Coffy was seriously burned on his face and arms and internally injured. He will die; Joseph Parduski was dangerously injured and had his clothing burned from his body. His case is considered doubtful. Nicholas Gray, the driver boy, had his right eye torn from the socket.

Marriage licenses were issued yesterday to J. H. Bennett and Mary L. Runnels, and to G. W. Baer and Mary A. Burns.

The Insane Commission on yesterday found Barnard McDaniel to be insane and ordered his confinement in the hospital at Mt. Pleasant.

Daniel Conklin was arrested yesterday on an indictment charging him with the burglary of Burk’s tailor shop some time since. He was admitted to bail of $1,000 to await trial.

John Stewart was arraigned before Squire McMartin yesterday charged with assaulting Rollin Stewart with intent to do great bodily harm. He will have his examination this afternoon.

Judge Labour met with a narrow escape while enjoying the splendid sleighing Sunday last. His wife and daughter were in the cutter with him, and in making the turn at West Sixth and Walnut, the runner caught on the street car track, throwing them all violently upon the pavement. Fortunately, none of them were injured, though it was an exceedingly narrow escape.

David Wilson was the name given by a young man who was yesterday convicted of defrauding an eating house keeper, and sentenced to pay a $5 fine and costs.

George Carter reported to the police the loss of his cutter, horse and buffalo robe, taken while hitched during Sunday night. He lives at 1204 East Ninth Street.

Andy Kennedy was before Judge Labour yesterday on a charge of larceny of some clothing, and the case continued until 2 o’clock to-day.

Hon. H. C. Wheeler, of Odebolt, is in the city visiting friends.

Moss Ada Preston returned Saturday from a visit of some days in Davenport.

Mr. Alf. Hammer left for Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, yesterday, to be absent a few days.

Mr. Robert Linn of Minneapolis is visiting with his brother, D. A. M. Linn of this city.

Judge E. S. Sampson, of Sigourney, is in the city attending to business before the Supreme Court.
