~Married: LeMars, Iowa, August 9, 1920
Ottillia Berner, LeMars Central Highschool Class of 1916
The former Ottillia Berner was born July 1, 1899, in LeMars, the daughter of Otto and Anna (Durst) Berner. She grew up in LeMars, attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School and graduated from Central High School in LeMars in 1916. She was the oldest living graduate of LeMars Central High School -- at the time of her death on February 19, 1999. |
Below are excerpts from the Berner Family Cookbook: Ottillia graduated in 1916 and started to teach school that fall, two miles north of Remsen (walking to and from work). In her high school yearbook, by her picture it said “She is pretty to walk with, and witty to talk with, and pleasant, too, to think on.” In 1917 her sister Ella married Orrin Kelly and Ottillia began teaching at the school where Ella had also been teaching on Highway 3 two miles east of LeMars. It was a 3-mile walk from her home and Ottillia was plagued with colds, so in 1918 she didn’t teach, but worked in the summer as an apprentice in a photo studio of Harry and Coyla Gaspar in Cherokee, Iowa. When it got time for schools to start that fall, she received calls about teaching north east of Remsen near Ella and Orrin Kelly, with the offer of very good pay and the ability to stay at Kelly’s for free and use the board money to help her mother, Anna Berner. With regret, she took that job, hating to leave Cherokee and the job she loved so much. In the summer of 1920, she married Vincent Peter Freymann. ~submitted by family researcher, Janice Cox |
