Phyllis Koopman, 86, of Le Mars, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at the V.A. Hospital in Omaha, Neb.
The former Phyllis Marion Freymann was born Oct. 26, 1923 in Omaha, Neb., the daughter of Vincent and Ottillia (Berner) Freymann. She grew up in Omaha and graduated from Omaha Central High School. During World War II, Phyllis served with the U.S. Navy as an airplane mechanic and was stationed in Hawaii. After the war, she returned to Le Mars and met Delbert Koopman. On June 15, 1949, Phyllis and Delbert were united in marriage in Chicago, Ill. After their marriage the couple lived in Brunsville for a few years before making their home in Le Mars.
Phyllis was employed for many years with Hotopp Jewelry in Le Mars.
Her husband Delbert died Feb. 15, 2001.
She had also been a foster grandparent at Gehlen School for several years.
Phyllis was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Christian Mother's Society, the Catholic Daughter's of America, and the American Legion, Heeren-McHale-Wilken Post #724 in Brunsville. She was also a volunteer with Hospice of Siouxland and the Promoters Club at Plymouth Manor.
She was a passionate historian and genealogist who never quenched her thirst for learning or her willingness to share that knowledge.
Survivors include her three children: Don Koopman, Anne Koopman and Theresa Koopman, all of Le Mars; four grandchildren: Alyssa, Alan, and Kelsey Koopman and Kiersten Marshall; nine great-grandchildren; a sister Elaine Blair of Canyon City, Colo.; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Darlene Koopman, Marlys Koopman, Mark Koopman and his wife Bernice, and Les Koopman, all of Le Mars.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Delbert; two grandchildren, Laura Lee and Shane Koopman; a sister, Jeanne Milczarek; and a brother, Jack Freymann.
A memorial Mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday Jan. 2, 2010, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Kevin Richter officiating. Burial, with military honors by the Heeren-McHale-Wilken Post #724 of the American Legion, will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars.
Visitation will be anytime after 3 p.m. Friday at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars, where there will be a Gehlen School rosary at 3 p.m., a combined rosary by the Christian Mother's and Catholic Daughters at 4 p.m. and a Vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation prior to the Funeral Mass on Saturday at the Church.
