In 1880 the
Professional men of Elliott were: Dr. W. A. Smith, M.D.; Dr. J. G.
Folly, M.D.; Dr. E. O. Baxter, M.D.; Dr. G. W. Manker, M. D.; Dr. J.
A. Reynolds, Dentist; James Kemoley, Contractor and Builder; (Mr.
Kempler constructed the first building erected on the town plat,
commencing it Oct. 23, 1879.) S. A. Briggs, Contractor and Builder;
D. S. McDaniel, Notary Public, general conveyance and Real Estate
Agent.*1
Early
proprietors of business establishments carrying advertisements in
the Elliott Enterprise, Sept. 3, 1880 include the following:
BANK OF
ELLIOTT - H. M. Murer & Co., Prop., (operated in a wooden
building and moved into a brick building in about 1881, reported to
be the first brick building in Elliott) as reported in "Elliott and
Its Progress" by Henry Barnes.*2 Also,
recorded as the first brick building by Blanche Carroll, (b.
Oct . 2, 1869 - d. June 8, 1958), dau. of W. H. Ammons, pioneer
businessman. Once occupied by Eshelman Impl. and presently by Max
Miller Farm Supply. John Murer was Elliott's first settler.
PIONEER
GROCERY AND CROCKERY STORE - operated by W. H. Ammons, born in
Pennsylvania, who built the store in 1879, and his family came up
from red oak in the spring of 1880. It was located on the West End
of Main Street, South Side.
COMMISSION
WAREHOUSE was operated by George M. Smiley in the business of
grain and livestock buying and handling farm machinery. (He also
built the house where McKibbans lived.)
ELLIOTT MEAT
MARKET operated by J. M. Smith, was the first meat market,
located one door east of the Elliott House.
ELLIOTT HOUSE
was the first hotel in Elliott and was operated by W. J. Petty,
father of J. H. Petty. (The building later housed McKibban's Barber
Shop, and is now Gord's Annex.
I. H. PAGE
GROCERY was operated by Isaac H. Page, a native of Ohio, and
handles general merchandise. he moved his store and Post Office into
Elliott on Dec. 20, 1879. Mr. Page had previously been selling goods
at Wilson Post Office, since 1876, in Pilot Grove Township.
THE PIONEER
DRUG, NEWS, AND VARIETY STORE operated by Joseph Clure, was the
first building erected on the town plat, commencing Oct. 23, 1879,
but due to sickness it did not open until Jan, 1880, and on July 23,
1880 he was appointed postmaster, instead of Mr. Page. (The drug
store later was operated by C. B. Halbert.)
IRWIN & CO.
operated by C. E. Irwin, a native of Ohio, and J. I. Freer, handled
drugs and medicines in the Dr. Baxter Building, (which stood just
east of the Milner Garage. It burned while occupied by George and
Grace Marsh as a restaurant.) George Starr was one of the druggists.
