Strait Family Homestead   

This is the homestead of the Strait family taken before 1897.  The believed identification of the persons in this picture are as follows:  Joshua Strait (older man), Orabel and her husband John Bowen Strait, Sr (son of Joshua) and three sons of John Bowen Strait Sr.  John Bowen Strait Jr., Edward Strait, George Sherman Strait or Luther J. Strait (one son was taking the picture?).

The 160 acre farm was 1 mile east of Clare, Iowa and 5 miles north.  It was right on the corner  of the road that is directly east of Pioneer...There was acres of different kinds of apple trees that the older generations were known for. Also a huge vegetable garden-& mulberry trees, etc. . . . . .(more)
1871 Diary of Elizabeth Blaisdell

"Elizabeth McClelland married George Washington Blaisdell 17-Aug-1870 in Waupun, Dodge, Wisconsin. Two weeks later, 31-Aug-1870, they left Brandon, Wisconsin for Humboldt, IA. in a horse driven, covered wagon. The family arrived,  3-Sep-1870 and opened one of the first farms in Weaver: . . .(more)
