Schools
The first Adair school building was erected in 1875 and completely destroyed by fire on March 25, 1895. The left-most building above was erected in 1896 as Adair Public School, and in the early 1920's was expanded to the east, serving all grades until 1961. On June 24, 1948 bonds for $55,000 were passed to build a gymnasium on the school grounds. The gymnasium building can be seen above to the right. The gymnasium included a stage for school plays, musical performances, etc. Prior to construction of the gymnasium the opera house on Main St. had been rented for sports, operettas and plays.
In July 1957 Adair and Casey were designated as Adair-Casey Community School. Rural schools were closed and the rural students bused into town. In 1958 $500,000 in bonds were voted to erect a High School building between the two towns in Guthrie County. The new junior-senior high school building was dedicated in 1961, and about 300 students from Adair and Casey moved to the new building. The original school buildings in Adair and Casey then became solely K-6.
A bond issue was passed in 1974 and construction began on a new elementary building in Guthrie County, adjacent to the existing junior-senior high school building. The new elementary section opened in April, 1976. The original school buildings in Adair, shown above, were then razed and the property sold as residential lots.
