Schmidt Family Cemetery

Located off Hwy 13 & 295th St.


The Schmidt family cemetery was located on the Adam Schmidt farm. If there were grave markers, they were removed at some time. Unknown is if the cemetery is currently fenced.

"Adam Schmidt, of Cox Creek township in this county, has ben severely afflicted by the loss within a few days of five interesting children, two girls and three boys, by diptheria. The pertinacity with which this disease clings to the country is attracting the serious attention of medical men all over the land."

Additional Information used to compile the cemetery burial list

- Burial of the 5 young Schmidt children on the farm is very likely. Adam Schmidt purchased land from the Federal Government in Sections 10 & 15 of Cox Creek twp., all patented in 1855. He continued to live on his land until his death in 1887. His children who died of diptheria were probably buried on the farm.

- Also owning land in Section 10, adjacent to Adam's land, was Frederica Schmidt. Her patent is dated 06/15/1855. In May 1855, Frederike / Frederica Schmidt was married to George Zigler / Zeigler. The relationship of Adam Schmidt and Frederike Schmidt is unknown.

- The obituary of Minnie (Schmidt) Gusta, wife of Gustaf Gusta, states she was "the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Schmidt, and the last of a family of nine children". Minnie was born 01/01/1854 and died 04/29/1945. Besides the 5 who died in 1862, her siblings were Caroline (Schmidt) Hartman (died May 1909 in N.Dak.), and brother Adam Schmidt (died 1896)
