The death of Mr. Adam Schmidt, one of the earliest settlers of Cox Creek township, which sad event occurred on Tuesday morning, will be received with regret by his numerous friends all over the county. He was sick but a short time, his death being caused by heart and stomach troubles.
Deceased was a native of Germany, where he was born in 1820. When about thirty years of age he came to the United States, and a few years later, about 1853, he came to Clayton county, settling in Cox Creek township, where he resided continuously until his death.
He leaves a wife and three grown children to mourn his death. Mrs. Charles Hartman, of Elkader, is a daughter of deceased; another daughter resides in Nebraska.
Mr. Schmidt was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge at Elkader, and the funeral on Wednesday afternoon was attended by many members from this place. In accordance with his request his remains were laid away to their final rest on the farm where he had labored so long.
A good man, kind friend and neighbor has gone home, and he will be greatly missed by those among whom he had lived so long.
