Julia Alice, daughter of C. W. Vangundy born in Decatur, RI., Oct. 15, 1857 and died April 6, 1936, who as a little girl moved with her parents to Attica, Ind., then to Missouri and back again to Illinois where she met and married John Miller. (Born June 4, 1895, died Dec. 12, 1919) on Dec. 9, 1875. To this union were born 9 children. Virgil (1875-1905) married Elizabeth Hamm; Walter (1878-1955) married Lulu Hazelett; Ada (1881-1955) married Arthur Emm; Oscar (1884) married Anna Little; George (1886) married Mammie Claypool; Lewis (1888-1916) married Hattie Dewey; Aaron (1889) married Arda Martindale; James (1891­(1919) married Luella Whitehead; Luella (1893) married Chester Hoffman. They came with their family by train from Lame, Ill, to Storm Lake, Iowa, in 1887 where they resided for 12 yrs. turning the prairie soil of Buena Vista Co. In the fall of 1900, 2 sons Virgil & Walter drove wagons & machinery to a farm 5 miles southeast of Murray, the present Leo Wolfe farm. The family joined them in the spring of 1901. The tall bluegrass was ideal for grazing their cattle. John dealt in Real Estate and the boys did the farming. His father use to drive hogs through timber to Chicago from Indiana with Abraham Lincoln and the Millers have been traced as distant descendants of Lincoln's mother, Nancy Hanks. With Virgil, Walter, Ada and George married and Lewis at Drake

 

University, Mr. Miller bought the present Aaron Miller residence and moved his family to town in 1912. Here Aaron attended and graduated from Murray High School and was rural mail carrier for 2 years. Being handy with tools and liking the work he gradually established a trade as carpenter and worked for years with Homer Torrence and constructed buildings in Des Moines for several years. March 17, 1914, he married Ardie Martindale and to this union were born 6 children. Margaret married Ernest Poil and has 2 children, Joyce and Elvin; Elvin and Lowell who died in infancy; Jean (Mrs. Glenn Midland and children, Paul, Pamelia and Peter living in Phoenix, Arizona; Lorna married Wayne Orfield with children Rodger who died at age of 17, Sharon recently married to Richard Blunt, Barbara and Dennis of Indianola; Ruth (Mrs. George White and son, George William of Des Moines; and Dale who married Charlotte Walton of Chicago and resides there with their one daughter, Heidi.

Aaron with his wife were active in the work of the Christian Church of which they are members, she acting as organist for years. The mens quartet of Everett Ogden, Aaron, Charlie Dick and Dr. Taylor accompanied by Arda will be remembered in the community by many. They are now enjoying a life of retirement with many friends and family in a community they love.
