George Poils grandparents, William Poil (spelled Poile in England) left there about 1851 or '52 from Rovenden West Co. Kent England; settled in Utica, N. Y., later moving to Wisc., Ill. and then to Ia. His father Alfred was one of twelve children born in England and two died there. It will be remembered, his brother, E. J., married Rebecca Carns and their daughter, Nora, married Miss Cornell whose father was a preacher at the Christian Church. E J's second daughter, Hattie, married Frank Saffell who resides in Des Moines as do their children, Olive, Opal and Lester. His two sons, Ed and Jim Poil, were bachelor residents of Murray. George Eugene Poil (Jan. 13, 1869-June 9, 1957) was the third of a family of 13 children born to Alfred and Mary Foil at Peoria, Ill. John, Josephine Kelly, George married Ella Himes, Arthur married Beatrice Martin Poil Thompson, William, Estella May, Alfred, Daisy Bubb, Mary Ella (Mayme)Welcher Kelly, Olive Bert Wade Gregory McPherson, Alvin (Al), Oscar V, Goldie May Vest Himes. In 1878 the family moved to Iowa to a farm southeast of Murray now owned by Basil Willett. They also lived west of town on the present David Simmerman farm. On Christmas Day 1895, George was united in marriage to Ella Roberts Himes (Oct. 11, 1876-Dec. 17, 1961) at Lafayette, Ill. Her family journeyed westward in a covered wagon, crossing the Miss. and settling briefly on a farm at Lewis, Iowa in 1882 then to a farm at Massena, Iowa, where she grew to womahood. They moved to Murray in 1909. Her father, William Henry Himes married Racherl LeMoine and on her passing (1873) again married Flora Miner in 1875. To this union were born four children; Ellen (Ella) Poil, Howard of Calif., Willie and Floyd of Murray. He succombed to stroke of paralysis Feb. 1920 and she later married H. L. Adams who for several years had a restaurant where the Pool Hall now is and later a hotel at the present Lions building. They then bought the now Loretta Kluht residence and built an addition for hotel and rooming house. Flora died Aug. 1925 and he three years later. The place was sold to Allen and then to McConnels. George and Ella lived a quiet unassuming life on a farm six miles south of Murray moving to town (now Vanderlinden property) later in life. Being pioneers of the community they loved to live over again with friends the life of bygone days and enjoy companionship of each other. To this union were born three children, Orval and Lloyd who died in infancy and Ernest whose permanent residence has been Murray for some years now. He and his wife, Margaret, (Aaron Miller's daughter) are employed at Clarke Co. Hospital. His daughter, Joyce, and son, Elvin, recently home from the Navy, are employed and reside in Des Moines. In our hearts will linger memories of many friends and kind deeds of this community.
