The Scott Family 1867

Hannah C. Scott

Mr. & Mrs. Hullum Scott, both born in Virginia, 1810, were married in 1831. Four years later they moved to Indiana, in 1856 they moved with their family to Monroe Co., Iowa. In 1867 they all moved on to Murray and settled in and near there, where they spent the rest of their life. While there, they felt the need of a Methodist Episcopal Church and made arrangements with Rev. John Daily, a Circuit Rider, to come to the Pennal schoolhouse in Troy Twp. and organized a Sunday School and preaching service, working thereafter faithfully in the Church. In 1867 the first Methodist Church was built and their granddaughter, Lulu Scott was the first Organist in the Methodist Church. She was the eldest daughter of the Newton Scotts, and she died at the age of 11.

The Hullum Scotts homesite is where the Orval Farr's live and the Newton Scott home is the Wendell Mathes home now.

Some of the older settlers of the Murray Community were the Wicks, Lochries, Flynns, Crops, Bruffeys, Sells, Dufers, Hoffmans. Dr. Grigg, Dr. Emery. With their foresight and efforts, they helped to make the little town of Murray a good place to live.

The Hullum Scotts were the grandparents of Mrs Mable Dalby and Tot Scott of Osceola, Iowa.
