Edwin Allen Family

In 1868 the land upon which this building now sets became a part of the original town of Murray. The lots changed hands several times in the years that followed and in 1892, it was purchased by Phillip and Rosa Schaefer and the above building was erected. A furniture store and undertaking business was established in it by them.

In 1917 the lots and building were sold to W. H. Bill Riggle. He and Clyde Hendricks were partners in a successful business, "The Murray Produce," which they sold to Edwin Allen in July 1946.

The Allen Produce & Feeds business (above) was in operation until 1959. At this time Mr. Allen discontinued produce and feed business and entered into the Allen Bottle Gas, Plumbing & Heating business which he still owns and operated in this centennial year of 1968.

Edwin's wife is the former Margaret Morrow. Their son, Larry, is a Medical Technician and is head of the blood banking deparment at Broadlawns Polk County Hospital in Des Moines. Their daughter, Patricia, is a student at Southwestern Community College in Creston.
