Paul Polson
was born 17 April 1925 near Marcus, IA, the son of Gottfrid &
Guro (Bly) Polson . His family moved to a farm north of Cleghorn in the
1930's. He farmed there until his death 10 May 2006.
Paul
served in the Navy during WWII in the amphibious forces upon the
transport ship USS Colbert APA 145, in the South Pacific. The ship had
just picked up POW's from Okinawa and a major typhoon was brewing. The
rough seas blew a mine into the side of their ship, killing two men.
One of the men was a POW they had just rescued.
Paul
was discharged on June 4, 1946 at St. Louis. He was 21 years old. He
had two years of duty, some of which was aboard the USS Colbert. He was
discharged wearing one battle star on an Asiatic Pacific ribbon.
