JOHN A. WELSH was born in Mt. Vernon, Knox County, Ohio, on September 17, 1850. He was the elder brother of William C. Welsh. After the death of the father, the family moved to Buda, Illinois, where John Welsh later successively clerked in a store, surveyed for the Chicago, Burlingtonm and Quincy Railroad, farmed, kept books for a Buda dry goods store, and finally worked as bookkeeper for a bank before moving to Cass County, Iowa in the spring of 1874. He purchased the northeast quarter of Section 26 of Brighton Township on the west side of the Elk Horn Road, opposite land his brother bought four years later. John A. Welsh married Mary F. Bruner in 1872 and they had two children as of 1884 - Charles E. and Ada. John A. Welsh was a respected member of the community and held several elective offices of Brighton Township, including that of president of the township school board and director of District No. 7.
