FRANKLIN HERBERT, son of J. R. Herbert, and born in Columbiana County, Ohio, on July 17, 1837. He served in the Civil War as a volunteer from Ohio and in 1867, moved to Wisconsin, but shortly afterward removed to Cass County, Iowa, to settle on land his father had obtained. Franklin Herbert's farm included 160 acres in the southwest quarter of Section 2 of Brighton Township. He married Laura Franklin in October, 1872, but she died after three years of marriage, leaving one child, Mabel. Franklin Herbert married Laura Mott in December, 1877, and they had two children, Fred and Delmar Owen.
