JOHN W. BURRUSS was born on January 26, 1831, in Campbell County, Virginia. He married Mary A. Clay on October 19, 1859, and in 1868 they left Virginia and settled in Cass County. In May, 1869, John Burruss purchased the west half of the southwest quarter of Section 25, which was an 80-acre tract on the east side of the Elk Horn road one-half mile north of present Route 83. The Burruss family had one child, Katurah, who was a school teacher in Cass County.
