Stangl

Written by Viola Joens Stangl

This is a story about John and Antoinette Pille Stangl of Carroll County. They are the parents of my husband, Barney [Oswald Barney Stangl, b. April 9, 1911, Arcadia, IA]. This is dedicated to him.

Joseph Stangl Sr. [Grandfather of John] born in 1822 and his wife Anna Miesel born in 1812 were married just before they migrated from Bavaria, Germany to the United States. The year was 1846. They landed in St. Louis and took a boat with eight other families up the Mississippi river to Dubuque, Iowa. After transferring their possessions to wagon drawn by oxen, they moved westward from Dubuque. At the end of the first day they stopped near an inn called the seven mile house. They slept in their wagons on the open prairie. The following day they resumed their journey. They reached a point about two and a half miles northeast of the future site of Dyersville. Mr. Stangl and his new bride settled in Bremen Township [Delaware County]. After some years of farming they moved to Dyersville and conducted a candy store on West Main Street. Still later they moved to Carroll County where Mrs. Stangl died in 1891, Mr. Stangl died about 1895. They are buried in Templeton, Iowa.

Their children were John, Michael, August, Joseph, Aloys (John Stangl's father), Elizabeth and Mary.

Hi, I have attached a photo for the unknown photos of Carroll, Iowa. that you will see is labeled Mr. and Mrs. august Schultz. it was taken at Rohner studio of Carroll, Iowa. my brother found the picture among possessions of our late grandma in Kankakee county, Illinois. last night I was browsing thru photos at ancientfaces.com and found the exact same photo-even on ancient faces the names were penciled in. I contacted the man who posted the photo in April 2001, and he told me he bought it at an antique store in Alabama. I would be interested to know more about these people as I have Schultz's in my family tree. thanks!
