George Dinnie
10 June 1853 ---- 4 January 1942

George Dinnie Sr., father of John Dinnie of this city, was buried here last Wednesday in the family lot in Rose Hill cemetery. The following is from the Belle Plaine Union.

Mr. George Dinnie Sr., one of the older residents of this city, passed away at the Virginia Gay hospital in Vinton Sunday morning, Jan. 4 at 3 o'clock.

Mr. Dinnie had been in failing health since last June and since October 15 had been having hospital care.

At the time of his passing, he was 88 years, 6 months, and 25 days of age, having been born on June 10, 1853 in Brechin, Scotland.

He was a son of George and Catherine Dinnie. He grew to young manhood in the town of his birth and learned the machinist's trade at a factory there under the supervision of his father, who was the foreman.

At the age of 18 years, he came to the United States and to Clinton, Iowa, where he entered the employ of the Northwestern railway as a machinist. After a few years he was promoted to the position of roundhouse foreman and later to general foreman, and he served in those capacities at Boone, Eagle Grove, Belle Plaine, Tracy, Minn., and at Chadron, Neb. He also spent ten years at Savanna, Ill., as foreman in the Milwaukee railroad shops and was for a time with the Rock Island railroad at Peoria, Ill.

At Clinton, Iowa, on September 15, 1875 he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Jane Powell, and they were the parents of the following children, Katherine J. of this city; Agnes V. of Cedar Rapids; George W. of this city; John C. of Eagle Grove; Eleanor Idne, now Mrs. T. E. Ealy of this city; and Arthur L. Dinnie, of Clinton, all of whom survive him, and he was preceded in death by three daughters, Mable and Mae, who were twins, and Mary, who all passed away in childhood, and his youngest son, Ray Dinnie, who passed away in this city in 1916. Mrs. Dinnie also passed away here in 1911. He is survived by his granddaughters, Jane Ealy of this city, Jacqueline Dinnie of Minneapolis, and Helen Jeanne Capion and Joan Dinnie of Clinton.

Since retiring from active life, Mr. Dinnie has had his home with his children here at 1611 11th Avenue. He took great pleasure in reading and was well informed on many subjects, and up to the last few months was keenly interested in current affairs and was active physically until overtaken by illness.

Funeral services were held at the Peffers Funeral home in this city on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with Christian Science services in charge of Mrs. J. L. Driscoll, First Reader of the local Christian Science society.

The body was taken to Eagle Grove for interment in the family lot in Rose Hill cemetery. All of the out of members of the family were here for the funeral.
