Ben Cowan Buried Sunday

Pioneer Citizen, Business Man and Farmer Passed Away Last Friday Morning.

The funeral of Ben Cowan who died last Friday morning was held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon with Rev. Muhleman in charge. A complete nervous breakdown which occurred less than two weeks ago was the immediate cause of Mr. Cowan’s untimely passing. He was a pioneer settler in this community. At one time he conducted a meat market on Broadway where the Cole Bros. Now operate. When he sold his business, he moved onto his farm just west of this city and lived there until [???] when he retired from active work and moved to town.

Mr. Cowan was a man of the highest integrity. He valued his word above all else and it was always rendered as good as a government bond. The universal sympathy of the entire community is extended the sorrowing relatives in the hour of their great sorrow.

Obituary
(By Rev. W. G. Muhleman)

Benjamin Baskerville Cowan was born Oct. 29, 1861 in Clinton, Ontario, Canada. When he was nineteen years of age, he came to Webster City, Iowa where he remained for only a few months. He then came to Eagle Grove, where he has since lived. He was one of the pioneers of Eagle Grove. He and his brother built the first big brick building on Broadway. He entered into the meat business in the market now owned by the Cole brothers, where he continued for twenty-eight years. When he gave up the meat business, he went to the farm which is now occupied by his son, Paul. In 1915 he returned to town and occupied the flat where he lived up to the time of his death.

On July 8, 1888 he was united in marriage to Miss May Darling of Eagle Grove. Five children were born to this union, Paul, Ollie, and Clinton of Eagle Grove, and Minnie Francis, and a baby, both deceased.

Mr. Cowan was a member of the Odd Fellows of Eagle Grove. He was a great lover of horses and in spite of the fact that the auto has come to play, he would not give up his horses and many people have seen him driving his buggy horse [????] One of the pleasures which the writer was asked to enjoy with him as late as last winter was a ride in his cutter.

Mr. Cowan was honest and upright in all his dealings. His sickness was not of long duration. He passed away on April 30, 1926 at the age of 64 years, 5 months, and 27 days. Aside from the members of his family including his wife, already mentioned, he leaves one brother, John, of Douglas, Wyo., two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Means of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Maggie Warner of Eagle Grove, Iowa, and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held in the Methodist church on Sunday afternoon, conducted by W. G. Muhleman, who preached from John 14:1-2. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery.
