Samuel C. Farmer died at his home here on August 20. His death marks the passing of another of our Civil War veterans. He was the second G.A.R. member to be called in ten days. Mr. Farmer has been failing in health for the past two years. Several years ago, he fell and since that time was obliged to go on crutches. Even with failing health, until within the last week before his death he was a daily caller down town and spent many happy hours in reminiscences with his two G.A.R. brothers.

Obituary

Samuel C. Farmer of Goldfield, Iowa, died August 20, 1928. He was the second son of Washington and Sarah Farmer, and was born near Wheeling, W. Va., April 8, 1846, being 82 years, 5 months and 12 days old at the time of his death. When he was three years old, he moved with his parents to Uhrichsville, Ohio, at which place they resided for six years and in 1854, moving in covered wagon, they located in Dubuque county, Iowa. The family remained there until December, 1863, when again using the covered wagon for transportation they moved west and settled in Wright county, about two miles north of Goldfield.

About this time, he made application for acceptance into the army but was rejected because of his size and height, but on May 23, 1864, he enlisted in Company A of the 48th Iowa Infantry. This was very near the close of the war and he was mustered out on Oct. 21, 1864, at Rock Island, Ill. He then returned to his home in Wright county, in which place he resided the remainder of his life with the exception of about seven years which were spent in Nebraska.

For a number of years, he was postmaster at Goldfield and was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge. He was a charter member of the 149th Hartman Post of the G.A.R. and at the time of his death was the second oldest member.

He leaves two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Rowen, of Rowan, Iowa, and Mrs. Lillie Pierce of Belmond, Iowa, and brother, Fred Farmer of Goldfield, Iowa.

The funeral was held in the Methodist church of Goldfield at 2:30 o'clock, Wednesday, August 22, and was under the auspices of the American Legion. Accompanied by a military escort under the command of Roy Griffith and the two remaining survivors of the Hartman Post, G.A.R., Messrs Thom L. Knight and Walter Sawin, he found his final resting place in the Glenwood cemetery at Goldfield.

Relatives from out of town attending the funeral were Mrs. Jennie Rowen and sons, John and Charles, of Rowan; Mr. and Mrs. James Rowen and Mr. and Mrs. Cady Templeton of Clarion, Mrs. Jennie Hake and Miss Nellie Pierce of Belmond, Mrs. Fred Madison and children of Marengo, Mr. and Mrs. Frank O. Farmer and children of Cedar Rapids, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Farmer and children of Storm Lake.
