John A. Butler

HORNICK, Iowa - John A. Butler, 86, of Spearville, Kan., formerly of Hornick, died Sunday at his home in Spearville.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Hornick United Methodist Church. The Rev. Gary DeGeest will officiate. Burial will be in Willow Township Cemetery at Holly Springs. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today in the Wood Funeral Home in Sloan.

Mr. Butler was born Jan. 13, 1898, near Oakland. He married Hazel Boyd June 15, 1924, at Chicago, Ill. They moved to Hornick in 1929 where they farmed for many years. She died Sept. 3, 1972, at Sioux City.

He had been a resident of Spearville since 1960. He was the greenskeeper for the Dodge City (Kan) Municipal Golf Course, retiring in 1979. Mr. Butler was a member of the United Methodist Church at Hornick, Hornick Odd Fellows Lodge and Moose Lodge at Dodge City.

Survivors include one son, Phil of Memphis, Tenn.; two daughters, Mrs. Roy (Beth) Johnston of Piano, Texas and Mrs. Mervin (Jessie) Zellmer of Sioux City; three stepsons, Clarence Nickolisen and Norris Nickolisen, both of California and John Boyd of Blair, Neb.; a sister, Mrs. Arlene Pennington of Florida; 20 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
