JOHN F. DAY DEAD.
Was the Second Son of Decorah’s Pioneer Family.—Was Eight Years Old When He Came to Iowa.
Word came to M. H. Montgomery and family on Tuesday morning that John F. Day, second son of Mr. and Mrs. William Day, the first settlers of Decorah, died on Monday at the family home in New Orleans. No particulars were contained in the message but from the fact that Mr. Day sustained a stroke of paralysis about a month ago it may be assumed that his death was due to this cause.
Mr. Day was born in Virginia in 1841 and in 1848 moved west with the family to Cassville, Wis., where they remained until the spring of 1849, when they came to Iowa and made their home where the Winneshiek hotel now stands. In company with his brothers he engaged in the lumber business. Later he and his brother Richard acquired large lumber interests in northern Wisconsin and had headquarters for many years at Wausau and Rhinelander. When this field became exhausted Mr. Day sought a location in Louisiana and here he has added largely to his wealth. Mr. Day was married in 1869 to Miss Elizabeth Noble, daughter of the late Judge Reuben Noble of McGregor, and life has given them many pleasures and the opportunity to do much for others while they were prospering themselves. Mrs. Day, their sons Noble and Floyd and daughter Marian survive him. He is also survived by his younger brother Richard Day, whose home is in California.

Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone in Phelps Cemetery shows he was born in 1840 which does not agree with the above.
