FATAL ACCIDENT TO ROY NOBLE.
Caught in Shaft of Gas Engine, Death Resulting from His Injuries.
The following account of the accident which caused the death of Roy Noble, of Bronson, Kas., on Tuesday of last week, is supplied us by one who is conversant with all the facts:--
Roy Noble met with a terrible accident on Friday evening, Dec. 26, which proved fatal, death resulting on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 30, at 3:20 at the Mercy hospital at Ft. Scott, Kas.
While Roy was starting a gas engine his clothing was caught by a set screw on a revolving shaft and before he would extricate himself he was drawn into the moving machinery and his breast and left shoulder terribly lacerated and torn. Had he not been a young giant physically he would probably have met instant death. By his great strength he freed himself from the shaft, but not until the flesh about his left shoulder and breast was frightfully mangled. Bleeding and suffering terribly he walked to a drug store a block away, where his injuries were dressed and he was taken home. He seemed to be mending as well as could be expected un{t}il Saturday when he suffered a hemorrhage from the a{u}xilliary artery and so copious was the flow of blood that death nearly resulted. An examination of the wounds made shortly after disclosed the fact that gangrene had set in. He was taken to Ft. Scott Monday night, where the operation was performed at Mercy hospital on Tuesday morning, but without avail.
The body was taken to Bronson and on Thursday morning funeral services were held at the M. E. church, conducted by the pastor, assisted by the other ministers. The high school and places of business were closed during the service.
His parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Noble, brother Will, sister Mrs. R. J. Novotny, and his most intimate friend, Clifford Thompson, accompanied the remains to Decorah, and the funeral was held from his sister’s home on Saturday afternoon, Dr. M. Willett officiating, burial being made in Phelps cemetery. Roy Chester Noble was born on his father’s farm near Conover, August 28, 1890. He went with his parents to Bronson about eleven years ago and has lived there since except about six months when the family returned to Decorah. He was a young man of clean habits, unflinching honesty and unvarying pleasantness, and was loved and respected by all who met him.Source: Decorah Republican Jan 8, 1914, P5 C3
