OBITUARY.
Mrs. Sarah Garfield Dudley died at three o’clock Sunday afternoon, Oct. 19, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Hargreaves, after an illness of ten days, due largely to the breaking down of old age.
Sarah C. Garfield was born Dec. 7, 1827, in Weston, Vt., and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Garfield, for many years well known residents of Conover and Decorah. She was married in February, 1845, to Ferdinand G. Dudley, and continued to reside in Vermont until 1857 when they came to Iowa and located at Freeport. Mr. Dudley enlisted in the Union army and died in hospital in 1863. Mrs. Dudley continued to make her home in Freeport until 1880, when she moved to Decorah, where she has since resided.
Prior to coming to Iowa three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Dudley. Their sons S. F. and H. D. Dudley died some years ago, leaving the daughter, Mrs. Hargreaves, as the only surviving member of the family. Early in life Mrs. Dudley joined the Baptist church, an affiliation that was never broken. For some years she was a member of the Relief Corps. Although she had traveled far beyond the allotted span of life she retained her faculties up to the last, and was able to do the most beautiful needlework without the aid of glasses. She was a woman of industry, always busy at some task, and it was one of her pleasures to keep an accurate account of the weather—a trait inherited from her father, who for years was a reporter for the government weather service.
The funeral was held at the home yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, Rev. M. Willett officiating and interment was made in Phelps cemetery. Many old friends attended to pay a last tribute to her memory.

Transcriber’s Note: Her gravestone shows she was born in 1826.
