OBITUARY.
William Gellerman, an old and well known resident of Decorah, died at his home in the Fifth ward at a few minutes after midnight on Monday morning, October 13th, aged eighty-four years, seven months and seven days. Mr. Gellerman was born in Oldenburg, Germany, and resided in Bremen and Oldenberg until 1861. On May{?} 11 of that year he was married to Dorothea Mackenstadt and two weeks later they sailed for America, arriving in New York on May 15. Coming direct to Iowa, they stopped at Garnavillo until August, when they came to Decorah, and here they have resided. For a number of years Mr. Gellerman worked for D. Addicken, later engaging in the dray business, which he continued until the infirmities of old age compelled him to cease active labor. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Gellerman; two died in infancy. The survivors are Mrs. Hanna Chandler, Louis P. Gellerman of Minneapolis, Henry Gellerman of Cloquet, Minn., Fred Gellerman of Cavour, S. D., and Margaret and Netta Gellerman who reside at home. His wife, and one brother residing at Ontario, Oregon, also survive. Before coming to America Mr. Gellerman was engaged as a postman and those who knew him in his native land say that no company was complete without him and that he was the life of any company in which he was a guest. Although he maintained a quiet demeanor, those who became intimately acquainted with him learned to appreciate his goodness of heart and kindness of thought for all about him. For several years he has been one of the shut-ins being afflicted with disease and blindness, as well as deafness. His death was due to the infirmities of old age augmented by diabetis{sic} and Bright’s disease.
The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at the home, Rev. Mahlon Willett officiating, and interment was made in Phelps cemetery. All the children were able to be present to pay their last tribute.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born Mar. 6, 1827 and died Oct. 13, 1913. The dates of their marriage and arrival in New York do not make sense. His obituary on Find a Grave shows they were married April 11, 1861.
